Before hosting Prime Minister Modi for a state luncheon during his visit in September 2021, the vice-president in her first meeting with Modi played both the good and the bad cop. She gently pushed Modi saying that as democracies around the world are under threat,“it is imperative that we defend democratic principles and institutions within our respective countries.”
