Mumbai, Oct 1 (Inditop.com) A key index of the Indian equities markets came to a rather tame end after trading on a volatile note Thursday to close 7.71 points above its previous closing figure.
The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,186.2 points, ended at 17,134.55 points, up 7.71 points or 0.05 percent from Wednesday’s closing figure of 17,126.84 points.
The S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), however, closed in the red at 5,083.4 points, down 0.01 percent.
On the other hand, broader market indices ended in the green, with the BSE midcap index closing 0.95 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index moving up 0.94 percent.
Telecom, IT and banking stocks found favour among buyers, while healthcare and auto scrips came under some selling pressure.
The market breadth was negative with 1,123 stocks advancing, 1,663 declining and 82 remaining unchanged.
Among the gainers on the Sensex were Bharti Airtel, up 4.01 percent at Rs.435.35; Reliance Communications, up 3.25 percent at Rs.318; ICICI Bank, up 2.17 percent at Rs.924.45; and TCS, up 2.03 percent at Rs.631.95.
Among the losers were Maruti Suzuki, down 2.82 percent at Rs.1,651; HDFC, down 2.8 percent at Rs.2,699.15; Grasim Industries, down 2.44 percent at Rs.2,700.80; and Tata Power, down 2.18 percent at Rs.1,290.65.
According to data with the regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors bought shares worth $314.1 million Thursday.
Other Asian markets were in the red.
The Nikkei, a key index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, closed 154.59 points or 1.53 percent lower at 9,978.64 points.
The Kospi, benchmark index of the Korean Stock Exchange, ended in the negative, moving down 28.51 points or 1.7 percent at 1,644..63 points.
European markets were also low.
In Britain, the FTSE 100 index was ruling 30.6 points or 0.6 percent lower at 5,103.3 points, while its French peer, the CAC 40, was down 0.55 percent at 3,774.57 points.
Germany’s DAX was ruling at 5,655.15 points, down 20.01 points or 0.35 percent.
