Lucknow, April 16 (Inditop) A criminal case was lodged against Baleshwar Yadav, the Congress candidate from Deoria constituency in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha poll, for allegedly attacking a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) worker, the police said Thursday.

The case was lodged late Wednesday in the Paterahwan police station by Kalamuddin who alleged that Yadav had attacked him with the intention of killing him in the neighbouring Kushinagar district.

Voting is being conducted in Deoria and Kushinagar districts in the first phase of general elections Thursday.

Yadav was earlier with the National Loktantrik Party. He has now switched loyalties and is contesting the polls on a Congress ticket from Deoria.

“A case has been registered against him (Yadav) under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC,” inspector T.P. Srivastava of the Paterahwan police station said.

Congress sources said that the brawl took place between the workers of the two parties after the news spread that Kalamuddin was distributing money to voters and asking them to vote for BSP candidate Gorakh Jaiswal.

“Yadav reached there along with his supporters and protested the move. However, the BSP men attacked us and also lodged a case against us,” a Congress worker claimed.

“He (Yadav) was arrested earlier today (Thursday) and brought to our police station. Now we are moving him to Fazilnagar police station where the incident took place,” Srivastava added.

Though Fazilnagar falls in the Kushinagar district, it has become a part of the Deoria constituency after delimitation
