Mumbai, April 17 (Inditop) Two more college students have been arrested for the gang rape of an American student here, taking the number of those arrested to five. One suspect was still absconding, the police said Friday.
Trombay police station senior inspector N.R. Ambupe said that while three of the six suspects were nabbed last Monday, two more were arrested from downtown Churchgate early Friday.
“We are hopeful of arresting the last accused shortly,” Ambupe told IANS.
The two men arrested Friday would be taken to a magistrate Friday afternoon, and the police would seek their remand. The three men arrested earlier are in police custody till April 28, the inspector said.
The six suspects, all in their early 20s, are from business families and are senior students in various prominent city colleges, according to Ambupe.
Last Saturday, the American student of the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Trombay area of Mumbai had gone for a party with her hostel mate, identified as Annie Brown.
They were accompanied by Brown’s five male friends at the popular Cafe XO in nearby Deonar suburb of northeast Mumbai.
Later, the victim was invited to the home of one of the accused, at Andheri West. She fell unconscious in the flat.
The suspects allegedly took advantage of the situation and raped her. Five of the six have been identified as Vinamra Soni, a student of Jai Hind College, Jaskaran Singh Bhullar of H.R. College, Daryus Colabawala of Hinduja College, Anish Bortatki of S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Harshavardhan of Sydenham College.
Since the victim did not know the suspects or where she had been taken, the police started their investigations at TISS.
They learnt from the students there a couple of the suspects were staying at the International Students Hostel, Churchgate. When the police went there to investigate, they found some of the suspects and managed to zero in on the rest through them.
