New Delhi, Nov 20 (Inditop.com) Indian Internet shoppers spent on an average $2,086 (Rs.97,200) in the past 12 months, according to the Visa e-Commerce Consumer Monitor survey report released Friday.

“Indian respondents spent an average of $2,086 in the past 12 months. Respondents from Asia Pacific spent an average of $2,526 during the same period,” the Visa survey said.

“Being able to search for a good deal, compare prices and save money is definitely a driver for consumers to go online,” said Visa’s country manager Uttam Nayak.

Visa is a global payments technology company operating in more than 200 countries.

The most popular online purchase items were music downloads, accounting for 50 percent of the spend.

Respondents spent $1,469 on travel-related services, with the top three travel categories in e-commerce being airline tickets ($700), online travel agents ($361) and travel accommodation ($253).

“Travel remains attractive for many consumers even as the global economic outlook remains cautious,” said Nayak.

A majority (75 percent) of Indian respondents said the freedom to shop anytime was the main attraction for online shopping followed by the ability to compare prices and save time.

Fifty-one percent of Indian respondents who shopped on overseas sites said most of their international online purchases were from US-based websites.

At the same time, security of online cross-border shopping was also a major concern for Indians compared with other Asia Pacific respondents.
