Bhubaneswar, April 21 (Inditop) Orissa declared an early summer vacation for schools Tuesday due to an unprecedented heat wave in the state that has caused one person’s death, an official said.
“Both the private and government schools in the state have been ordered to declare an early summer vacation from Wednesday,” Revenue Secretary G.V.V. Sarma told IANS Tuesday.
“Usually the summer vacation starts from the 1st of May every year but we have asked the school authorities to declare it early this year because temperature has crossed 44 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state,” he said.
“However, teachers and the school staff have been asked to attend office as usual and do work assigned to them,” Sarma said.
He said 23 deaths have been reported during the past 30 days but the government has confirmed only one death due to sunstroke.
The meteorological office here Tuesday said the heat wave condition is prevailing in several areas of the state, which recorded maximum temperature of over 44 degrees Celsius Monday.
The same condition is likely to prevail during the next 24 hours, an official at the meteorological department said.
