Rawalpindi, Dec 31 (Inditop.com) The Pakistan Army said Thursday it had achieved major successes in the war against terrorism in 2009 by killing more than 2,600 terrorists including foreigners.

Speaking to reporters here, Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas, the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations, said that at least 223 officers and other ranks of the Pakistan Army were killed and 350 were wounded since the launch of the military operations in the Malakand division of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and in South Waziristan in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

He said there were some 1,000 to 1,500 foreign terrorists, among them Uzbeks and Arabs, in South Wazirisitan, of which many had been killed.

However, according to figures gathered by Online news agency from military sources, 1,600 terrorists were killed during operation Rah-e-Rast in the Swat, Buner and Dir districts of Malakand.

Around about 140 officers and other ranks of the Pakistan Army were killed during this operation.

Over 700 terrorists have been killed so far during operation Rah-e-Nijat in South Wazirisitan, 83 officers and other ranks also lost their lives, the figures show.

According to the military authorities, over 6,500 terrorists have so far been killed in the war against terror from 2003 to 2009.
