Mumbai, Jan 22 (Inditop.com) K. Sankaranarayanan was sworn in as the new governor of Maharashtra at a simple ceremony here Friday morning.
Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court J.N. Patel conducted the ceremony. Sankaranarayanan took the oath of office in English in the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan.
Present on the occasion were Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Mumbai Mayor Shraddha Jadhav, Sheriff Indu Shahani, cabinet ministers, legislators, top civil and police officials and members of the diplomatic corps in the city.
A dominant figure in Kerala politics, Sankaranarayanan was born Oct 15, 1932 and started his political career in 1946 at the age of 14.
In 1964, he was appointed the president of Palakkad district Congress and went on to become the Kerala Congress chief eight years later.
He was elected to the Kerala legislative assembly four times – from Thrithala, Sreekrishnapuram, Ottappalam and Palakkad constituencies. He was a cabinet minister in the state with several portfolios.
Sankaranarayanan was appointed governor of Nagaland in February 2007 till July 2009 and he guided the state when it was under President’s Rule in early 2008. He was then appointed governor of Jharkhand in July 2009 when it was under President’s Rule.
He also held additional charge as governor of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for brief periods.
