Chandigarh, Feb 12 (Inditop.com) A court here Friday granted bail to Utsav Sharma, who attacked disgraced former Haryana police chief S.P.S. Rathore, convicted for molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra.
Sharma, who is said to be mentally disturbed, furnished a bail bond of Rs.50,000. Armed with a pen knife, he had thrice stabbed Rathore in the face outside the district court complex Monday.
The Chandigarh Police opposed the bail and said Sharma, 29, could again indulge in “some anti-social activity”.
Police had accused him of causing hurt with dangerous weapons and criminal intimidation.
Police said Sharma, who pretended to be a journalist, had followed Rathore for the last one month and kept a close tab on the case through media reports.
His father, S.K. Sharma, is a professor in the mechanical engineering department of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), while his mother Indira is a psychology teacher.
He is pursuing a film production course at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. He is also fond of reading books on psychology.
A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court held Rathore guilty in December of molesting 15-year-old Ruchika Girhotra in Panchkula town in August 1990. She committed suicide three years later.
Rathore was sentenced to six months’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.1,000 in that case. He was granted bail after his conviction.
