Lucknow, April 27 (Inditop.com) Samajwadi Party (SP) activists Tuesday hit the streets, torched buses, stopped trains and clashed with police in Allahabad and Lucknow districts of Uttar Pradesh during the nationwide strike by 13 political parties over rising food prices.

Over 100 activists, including SP state president Akhilesh Yadav, have been detained for carrying out violent protests.

In Lucknow, SP activists set fire to three buses in Hazratganj and Alambagh localities. They also stoned police personnel.

The Rae Bareli passenger train was stopped in Lucknow and the Ganga Gomti Express train in Allahabad.

“The protest has turned violent now. Stern action would be taken against all those who have damaged public properties in Lucknow,” Lucknow District Magistrate Anil Sagar told reporters here.

Altogether 13 political parties, including the SP, Left parties, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have called a 12-hour strike to oppose the hikes in prices of petroleum and fertilizers and shooting costs of essential commodities.
