New Delhi, April 28 (Inditop.com) The power sector accounts for around 60 percent of the conuntry’s carbon dioxide emissions, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said Wednesday.
“The power sector approximately accounts for 60 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions generated in the country,” Ramesh told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
He said thermal power generation accounts for around 64 percent of the total power generation in the country.
Coal, gas and diesel-based power generation contribute approximately 82 percent, 17 percent and one percent of the thermal power generation.
Ramesh said the government took various steps for efficient use of coal in thermal power stations. These include use of “super critical boiler technologies, coal washing, coal blending and setting up of electricity regulators to enforce optimum generation and transmission of electricity”.
Old thermal power stations have also been renovated and modernised to enhance efficiency.
“Hydro power policy has also been revised recently to encourage investment in this sector,” he said.
