Gandhinagar, May 2 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court has slapped a fine of Rs.15,000 on a bank for cheating a 71-year-old widow and harassing her.
Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice J.B. Pardiwala fined Shree Bharat Co-operative Bank Ltd of Vadodara and ordered it to pay the amount to widow Vilasben Kothari.
According to the case, the bank lured Kothari to apply for a loan. She executed a mortgage deed and signed a few other documents for availing the loan.
The bank then informed Kothari that the loan has been sanctioned. But not a single paise was credited in the loan account.
Meanwhile, the bank initiated proceedings against the woman, who filed a suit before the Senior Civil Judge at Vadodara. The case later travelled to the high court.
