New Delhi, Dec 1 (Inditop.com) All that glitters ain’t gold, but it is sure the next best thing. With the marriage season under way and the price of the real thing skyrocketing, people are increasingly finding wisdom in going for costume jewellery – that too on rent.

“It doesn’t make sense to wear diamond or gold sets for every function. So for those days I have booked costume jewellery. Also, there is a frequent change in jewellery designs and trends. Given this, I would prefer to splurge on one exquisite set for my wedding day rather than opt for many,” bride-to-be Anamika Kalsi told Inditop.

“So the best thing would be to invest in some exotic pieces. No one will kill you for wearing costume jewellery during your wedding,” she added.

This is not a new phenomenon but with gold prices soaring high, the market for rental jewellery is just getting bigger.

“I can’t afford to wear gold jewellery because my family doesn’t earn that much. So what we have done for years, we will do the same on my wedding as well. I will get two gold bangles from my mother, the rest would all be rental costume jewellery,” said Jyoti Mohan (name changed).

Any kind of jewellery is available on rent for Rs.1,100-3,100 per day, depending on how heavy the set is.

One can buy costume jewellery from places like Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar and Sarojini Nagar.

“This trend is not new. It’s just that people are more open about it now. Costume jewellery looks so much like the original that it would be really difficult to differentiate between the two,” Mohini Sandhu, owner of Neelam Jewellery in Chandni Chowk, told IANS.

“Kundan sets, Swarovski style designs, even coloured sets are in demand as they can be matched with the clothes,” she added.

“All you have to do is not to go overboard with it. Only then people will make out. It’s all about doing it well,” suggests Sandhu.

The idea of wearing costume jewellery on your D-Day, however, does not go down well with everyone.

“I can understand that not everyone can afford expensive diamonds or heavy gold sets on their wedding. But please avoid doing that on your D-Day. It is so disgusting. It’s better to wear less than look like a bride modelling for a fake jewellery advertisement,” said Pinky Khanna.

Rajeev Arora, designer of Amrapali, a leading jewellery brand, says costume jewellery can never match the quality of original designs and pieces.

“You can’t match the intricate work and professional level of an original jewellery brand. We are here because of our work. We have our set of clients who won’t buy those fakes because they love to collect art pieces,” Arora said.
