Gandhinagar, Jan 1 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court has imposed curbs on advertisements of tobacco products on public transport buses in the state.

The bench of Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice Akil Kureshi issued the directions to the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) following a public interest litigation filed by Amarsinh Chaudhari.

‘It is expected that advertisements for gutka, cigarette and other injurious items like pan masala, if made from prohibited items, shall not be displayed either by the AMTS or GSRTC,’ said the bench in an order made available Saturday.

Chaudhari, through his advocate Vanraj Parghi, filed the petition challenging the advertisement of tobacco products on buses, saying these items were injurious to health.

The government-owned transport service providers informed the court that they would not invite any tenders for advertisement of these items.

The bench noted that a petition was pending before the Supreme Court wherein the apex court by an interim order prohibited sale of gutka, tobacco and pan masala sachets made of plastic material.
