New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) The Delhi government might extend an elevated road — built on the Barapullah drain for transporting athletes and delegates from the Commonwealth Games Village in east Delhi to the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in south Delhi — after the sporting event.
According to Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, the road, which is likely to be inaugurated in the first week of September, may be extended in both the eastern and southern directions after the Oct 3-14 event.
The government has plans to extend the road to trans-Yamuna area, beyond the Games village, and to INA market in the south Delhi, beyond the Nehru stadium, he said.
Chauhan told IANS that a proposal related to the road’s extension will be discussed by the cabinet after the Games are over. ‘The whole process may take 6-8 months,’ he said.
The four-kilometre elevated road, built at a cost of nearly Rs.550 crore, will be thrown open to the public after the Games.
For the first time in India, advanced construction technology was used to build an elevated road over traffic crossings, without blocking the movement of vehicles.
An official said the biggest challenge in the project was to construct the elevated road without disturbing traffic at five traffic intersections which it crossed.
The project for linking east Delhi with Nehru Stadium was first approved in 2006. The earlier plan was to build a tunnel between the Games village and the stadium but this was rejected.
In August 2008, the government decided to go ahead with the elevated road over the drain.
