New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Several families who were evicted from slums in the capital staged a protest outside the Lt.Governor’s office Tuesday demanding the plots of land promised to them.
The slums where these families lived in Yamuna Pushta and other areas were demolished in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
“It has been over eight years that the order was passed in which the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had to provide us with shelter. Inspite of having all the documents, we are still not being allotted land,” Umesh Singh, president of Bawana Sangharsh Samiti, told IANS.
There are around 650 families who have been fighting since 2004 to get plots at Bawana in north Delhi.
“As the Lt.Governor is the chairman of DDA, so we are demonstrating here. We have had many meetings with the earlier Lt.Governor Tejinder Khanna and now we want the new Lt.Govenor Najeeb Jung to take action,” Umesh Singh added.
