New Delhi, Feb 22 (Inditop.com) The government is committed to meet the challenges of climate change, President Pratibha Patil said Monday.

She said that an ambitious solar mission has been initiated to generate 20,000 MW of clean power by 2022.

“My government has taken several steps to meet the challenges of climate change. The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) is being operationalised. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission has been launched with an ambitious target of 20,000 MWs of solar power by 2022,” Patil said.

She was addressing the joint session of parliament that began its budget session Monday.

The Rs.4,337 crore solar mission, which is part of the government’s NAPCC, has an aim to generate 1,000 MW of solar power by 2013 in its first phase.

The cabinet last November cleared the setting up of 200 MW off-grid solar power and the coverage of seven million square metres with solar collectors from 2010 to 2013.

The plan also envisages providing solar lighting systems to 9,000 villages through soft loans.
