Mumbai, Jan 22 (Inditop.com) Grasim Industries, flagship company of the Aditya Birla group, Friday reported a 40.7 percent rise in net profit at Rs.795.7 crore for the quarter ended Dec 31, compared to Rs.565.3 crore it earned in the last corresponding period.

Net sales of the company grew 5 percent to Rs.4,843.51 crore during the quarter under review, from Rs.4,610.42 crore in the like quarter of 2008-09.

Earnings per share stood at Rs.78.01 during the quarter, compared to Rs.50.12 per share in the previous period.

The company, however, said the results were not entirely comparable as it had sold its sponge-iron unit in May last year.

The announcement by the company came after the end of trading in the Indian equities markets. At the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Grasim scrip lost 1.97 percent Friday from its previous close to end at Rs.2,607.60.

The company said it planned to consolidate all cement units and divisions of the group and merge it with a wholly-owned subsidiary Samruddhi Cement.
