New Delhi, April 21 (Inditop.com) Renewable Energy minister Farooq Abdullah Wednesday sought to distance himself from the controversies surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL) a day after maintaining that its chief Lalit Modi deserved a fair hearing.
“I’m not Modi’s saviour,” Abdullah, a member of the governing council of IPL and president of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, said here on the margins of a seminar on renewable energy options for the telecom sector.
“Let him explain himself, even I want to know the truth,” the minister said, referring to the meeting scheduled next week where Modi is expected to come under pressure to quit.
The IPL governing council is to meet April 26 to discuss allegations against Modi of lack of transparency in the bids for franchises. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) working committee meets May 2.
Just a day earlier, Abdullah had came out in support of Modi saying the cricket administrator had got into trouble because of his stupendous rise and there was no need for him to resign at this stage.
“Why should he go? We have to see. There is a meeting on (April) 26th. Let’s see what the charges are and what his replies are. We can’t become judges,” the minister had said.
He also opposed demands for nationalization of the cash-rich IPL.
