Gandhinagar, May 31 (IANS) India’s top car maker Maruti Suzuki Limited is planning to set up a 10-lakh annual capacity plant in Gujarat, an official spokesperson said Tuesday.
Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Bhargav and Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi Tuesday called on Chief Minister Narendra Modi and expressed their desire to set up the plant on a 500 acre plot, according to the spokesman.
Bhargav later told reporters that the chief minister’s approach has been very positive.
According to government sources, the company has been offered land in Sanand in Ahmedabad district.
Both Bhargav and Nakanishi hoped the formalities for the first phase of the project could be completed in three months and the plant could go into production in five years.
Likely to cost around Rs.6,000 crore, the Gujarat plant can create employment potential for over a lakh people, according to the spokesman.
Maruti is already exporting cars through Mundra port in Kutch. A plant at Sanand would cut costs considerably as it has a direct road link to the port, he added.
Once completed, the Maruti’s will be the third automobile plant in Gujarat after General Motors (in Halol) and Tata Motors’ Nano plant at Sanand.
