Mumbai, May 14 (Inditop.com) A total of 700 people will be rehabilitated under a project to decongest the approach road to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) here, an official said Friday.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Mumbai International Airport have initiated the project for rehabilitating 700 project-affected-persons (PAPs) living there.

“After a series of dialogues with the PAPs, we have decided to start the work of rehabilitating them and take up the remaining work of the Sahar elevated road leading to the CSIA,” MMRDA Joint Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said.

The PAPs would be rehabilitated by the Mumbai International Airport Ltd through the MMRDA and the Housing Development Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) at the site near Premier Automobiles Ltd in Kurla, north-east Mumbai.

The removal of the PAPs from there would pave the way to complete the six-lane two km long elevated approach road which is being constructed at a cost of Rs.2.87 billion.

The elevated road is being funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Bhide said.

While nearly 60 percent of the elevated approach road is ready, work on the remaining portion would be taken up after the PAPs are rehabilitated, she added.

The elevated road would enable motorists to directly zoom to the CSIA from the Western Express Highway (WEH).

At present, negotiating the Sahar Road stretch to the CSIA can take nearly 45 minutes, but after the elevated road is ready, the drive to the airport would be completed in less than five minutes.

Besides allowing people faster access to the CSIA, it would also help decongest the existing Sahar Road and the Western Express Highway and smoothen the north-south-north flow of traffic during the morning and evening peak hours.

The elevated road to the CSIA is also designed to serve the expected growth in air travellers over the next few years.
