New Delhi, April 8 (Inditop) Photographic equipment manufacturer Nikon Wednesday launched eight new models of its flagship Coolpix brand of digital cameras, priced in the range of Rs.7,450-Rs.25,950.

The company, which commands five percent share in the Indian compact camera market, is targeting to double it by year-end.

Nikon is currently importing cameras from Japan and China, and said it did not have any immediate plans to start manufacturing units in India as the demand was still low.

“Indian digital camera market has a share of less than one percent in the global pie and we would like to initiate production here but only when there is enough demand,” Nikon India managing director Hidehiko Tanaka told reporters.

According to estimates, around one million compact cameras are sold in the Indian market a year.

“With the growing population and economy, India has a lot of potential and hopefully, we will start manufacturing here as the market evolves,” he added.

Tanaka said the company grew 50 percent in terms of revenue in 2008-09, compared to the year before.
