Chandigarh, May 18 (Inditop.com) Punjab and Haryana have procured over 165 lakh tonnes of wheat this year.

This is well short of the record 180 lakh tonnes procured last year.

As wheat arrivals in grain markets across both the states have dropped to a trickle, food and supplies officials say the total procurement is unlikely to rise. The procurement will continue till the end of May.

Government agencies – five of the state government and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) – have procured 101.65 lakh tonnes of wheat, which is nearly 99.5 per cent of the total arrival.

The agencies and private millers in Punjab procured more than 102.17 lakh tonnes of wheat till Monday evening compared to 106.66 lakh tonnes last year.

In Haryana, over 63.30 lakh tonnes of wheat had arrived till Monday, officials said.

Haryana had recorded 70 lakh tonnes of wheat arrival last year.
