New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) South Korean electronic giant Samsung on Thursday launched Gear VR — its flagship virtual reality (VR) headset — and two variants of the popular Gear S2 smartwatch for Indian consumers that will enable them augment and personalise their entertainment experience like never before.
The Gear VR that requires a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone to work can be bought at Rs.8,200 from all Samsung retail chains and on the e-commerce website Flipkart.
“The Gear VR presents the unique opportunity for consumers to get an immersive, interactive Virtual Reality experience. Samsung will be at the forefront of this exciting revolution to create further ‘wow’ moments in our consumers’ lives,” said Manu Sharma, director, marketing IT & Mobile at Samsung India, during a media interaction here.
The device is compatible with Galaxy smartphones, including Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge.
Users can download content from a robust selection of 2D and 3D videos and play over 150 games from the Oculus Store on the headset that gives a 360 degree video and experiential content – just like the 3D videos to the level of a movie hall.
The Gear VR has a trackpad, back button along with motion sensors offering gyroscopic and acceleration functions.
Built with soft, flexible cushioning and lightweight materials and adjustable straps, the Samsung Gear VR is comfortable to wear. It has huge eye space cavity enabling the users with spectacles to enjoy the 3D experience.
The device also provides optimum mobility as it is equipped with a Pass-Through features that allows the users to get notifications of incoming calls and messages.
Boasting a smart circular design, the Gear S2 smartwatch is available in two different variants — the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic — at Rs.24,300 and Rs.25,800, respectively.

The Samsung Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic are the first Samsung smartwatches with circular designs.
The stainless steel chassis makes the device very light and it sits slim and sleek on the wrist.
It consists of a 1.2-inch 302 pixel-per-inch density Super AMOLED display with a ceramic-coated gorilla glass. The Gear S2 classic can be paired with any standard 20mm watch straps while for Gear S2, strap adaptor is available in Samsung’s accessory selection.
The strap options with Gear S2 are Mendini, Warm Grey and Red while with Gear S2 Classic, Grey and Brown leather bands are available.
According to the company, the rotating bezel is a highlight of the new wearable as it will allow users to easily access all required information. The Tizen-based wearable platform that runs on Dual-core1 Ghz processor provides fast and easy scrolling of long emails, calling, texting, shuffle the music tracks and even zoom in/out the maps.
The device has 20-30 customisable watch faces and needles.
The device also works as a fitness trainer through an app called S-Health that assists in gym exercises and coaching for sports like tennis, cricket and golf.
