Mumbai, July 8 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities Thursday closed 172 points higher than its previous close, giving up some of the intra-day gains.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,536.48 points, closed at 17,643.77 points (provisional), 172.47 points or 0.99 percent up from its previous close at 17,471.03 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty shut shop at 5,292.1 points, up 0.97 percent from its previous close at 5,241.1 points.

Broader markets indices were also in the positive, with the BSE midcap index ending 0.83 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index up 0.57 percent.
