Mumbai, Oct 5 (Inditop.com) A key index of the Indian equities markets ended Monday near the day’s lowest levels, losing 1.56 percent from its last closing figure as investors sold scrips across sectors.
The 30-scrip benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, which opened at 17,062.01 points, shut shop at 16,866.41 points, down 268.14 points or 1.56 percent from Thursday’s closing figure of 17,134.55 points.
The S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too ended marginally in the red at 5,003.2 points, down 1.58 percent.
Broader market indices also ended on the losing side, with the BSE midcap index shedding 1.69 percent and the BSE smallcap index closing 2.12 percent down.
Telecom, IT and banking stocks found favour among buyers, while healthcare and auto scrips came under some selling pressure.
The market breadth was negative with 1,123 stocks advancing, 1,663 declining and 82 remaining unchanged.
Among the gainers on the Sensex were ITC, up 2.58 percent at Rs.238.50; Sun Pharma, up 2.29 percent at Rs.1,429.20; Reliance Infra, up 1.26 percent at Rs.1,220.80, and Hindustan Unilever, up 0.64 percent at Rs.266.85.
Among the losers were Bharti Airtel, down 8.05 percent at Rs.400.30; Grasim Industries, down 7.1 percent at Rs.2,509.10; Hindalco, down 6.75 percent at Rs.118.15, and Reliance Communications, down 5.6 percent at Rs.300.20.
Asian markets were mixed.
The Nikkei, a key index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, closed 57.38 points or 0.59 percent lower at 9,674.49 points.
The Kospi, benchmark index of the Korean Stock Exchange, similarly ended in the negative terrain, moving down 37.73 points or 2.29 percent at 1,606.90 points.
On the other hand, the primary index of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Hang Seng, closed 53.58 points or 0.26 percent up at 20,429.07 points.
At the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the benchmark SSE Composite also shut shop higher — 0.9 percent up at 2,779.43 points.
European markets were trading on a dull note.
In Britain, the FTSE 100 index was ruling 0.07 percent higher at 4,992.19 points, while its French peer, the CAC 40, was up 0.21 percent at 3,657.66 points.
Germany’s DAX was ruling at 5,484.36 points, up 0.3 percent.
