Mumbai, Aug 12 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities ended a volatile day of trade on a dull note, even though banking heavyweight SBI top scored with a 7.16 percent gain.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,972.65 points, closed at 18,075.91 points (provisional), almost unchanged from its previous close at 18,070.19 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty ended in the red at 5,413.7 points, down 0.13 percent or 6.9 points from its previous close at 5,420.6 points.

Broader markets indices were also subdued with the BSE midcap index moving up 0.35 percent and the smallcap index ending flat.

State Bank of India closed the day 7.16 percent up at Rs.2,790, after the state-run lender reported a 25 percent jump in net profit for the quarter ended June 30.
