Mumbai, April 22 (Inditop.com) A benchmark index for Indian equities Thursday closed 101 points higher than its previous close, after paring intra-day gains, as State Bank of India and Reliance Industries made strong gains.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,476.48 points, closed at 17,573.99 points, 101.43 points or 0.58 percent higher than its previous close at 17,472.56 points.
Reversing its early morning losses, the Sensex rose to 17,778.34 points during the day. RIL and SBI were among the main contributors to the Sensex’s rise.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty ended at 5,269.35 points, a gain of 0.47 percent from its previous close at 5,244.9 points.
Broader market indices ended flat.
Energy, auto and banking scrips saw buying, while realty and metal stocks came under selling pressure.
Top gainers on the 30-scrip Sensex were SBI, up 5.58 percent at Rs.2,222.65; Tata Motors, up 3.34 percent at Rs.836.15; HUL, up 2.09 percent at Rs.237.35; and RIL, up 2.03 percent at Rs.1,075.55.
Major losers included Sun Pharma, down 2.13 percent at Rs.1,710.85; Tata Steel, down 1.83 percent at Rs.656.50; DLF, down 1.45 percent at Rs.325.55; and ACC, down 1.3 percent at Rs.919.10.
According to data with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors were net buyers Thursday, having bought scrips worth $59.62 million.
Most other Asian markets, however, witnessed losses.
The Japanese Nikkei shut shop with a 1.27 percent loss at 10,949.09 points. The South Korean Kospi closed 0.46 percent down at 1,739.52 points.
The Chinese Shanghai composite index too ended in the red at 2,999.48 points, down 1.11 percent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed 0.26 percent lower at 21,454.94 points.
European markets were in the red at the time of closing bell here.
The FTSE 100, the benchmark index of the London Stock Exchange, was ruling at 5,672.13 points, down 0.9 percent, while its German peer, DAX, was trading 1.01 percent lower at 6,167.24 points.
The French CAC 40 index was also ruling in the negative at 3,934.51 points, down 1.09 percent.
