Mumbai, Aug 24 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities Tuesday ended trade with a 97-point loss on profit booking and weak global cues.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,407.01 points, closed at 18,311.59 points, 97.76 points or 0.53 percent down from its previous close at 18,409.35 points.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty shut shop 0.69 percent lower at 5,505.1 points.
Broader markets indices were also subdued, with the BSE midcap index ending 0.7 percent down and the BSE smallcap index 0.68 percent lower.
Weighing the markets down were realty and metal stocks, while consumer durables and FMCG scrips saw some buying.
The market breadth was negative with 1,184 scrips advancing, compared to 1,740 stocks declining and 114 remaining unchanged.
Among the gainers on the Sensex were Bharti Airtel, up 1.64 percent at Rs.322.05; Reliance Communication, up 1.22 percent at Rs.166; SBI, up 0.86 percent at Rs.2,8446.95 and HDFC Bank, up 0.49 percent at Rs.2,207.05.
The losers included Sterlite Industries, down 3.97 percent at Rs.152.40; Hindalco Industries, down 3.96 percent at Rs.168.45; DLF, down 2.6 percent at Rs.322.25 and Jaiprakash Associates, down 2.07 percent at Rs.118.25.
At other major Asian bourses, sentiments were bearish on concern over economic recovery in the US and Europe.
The Japanese Nikkei closed 1.33 percent down at 8,995.14 points while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended the day with a 1.1 percent loss at 20,658.71 points.
The Chinese Shanghai Composite index shut shop 0.41 percent higher at 2,650.31 points, backed by gains in realty stocks.
European stocks were ruling weak amid disappointing corporate earnings and some firms saying quarterly results could be poorer than expected. Doubts over the economic recovery too worried investors.
At the closing bell here, the FTSE 100 was trading 0.8 percent higher at 5,237.06 points, while the German DAX was ruling 0.42 percent up at 6,030.11 points.
The French CAC 40 was trading 0.94 percent higher at 3,559.64 points.
