New Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS) Hundreds of slums abutting railway tracks around the country will be removed ‘in a humane manner’, parliament was informed Friday.

Efforts would be made to prevent fresh squatting on railway land, Minister of State for Railways Bharatsinh Solanki said.
Solanki said the rehabilitation and resettlement of such slum dwellers would be done through railways’ Sukh Griha Scheme or other such welfare schemes.

The issue had been taken up with housing and urban poverty alleviation ministry ‘to arrive at a policy solution to relocate these slums’, the minister told the Rajya Sabha.

‘Railways are also engaged in a continuing exercise to prevent fresh encroachment by protecting railway land and property by providing boundary wall, fencing and tree plantation,’ he said.
