New Delhi, Jan 7 (Inditop) Indian truckers, whose nationwide strike entered the third day Wednesday, are hoping that the government will talk to them to end the impasse arising from their demands that includes a diesel price cut.
A senior board member of All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), that called the strike, told Inditop it is “likely” that the government will call the transport body for talks.
The truckers went on a nationwide strike in the early hours of Monday, demanding lower diesel and tyre prices.
Over six million trucks went off the roads across India, triggering fears of shortfall of essential commodities. The government has already threatened to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), if needed, against the strikers.
AIMTC office bearers said supplies of essential commodities have not been disrupted.
Brahm Yadav, chairman of Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board, said Wednesday prices have been affected because of the strike.
“We have seen an increase in light motor vehicle trucks bringing goods at the mandi (wholesale market), so there hasn’t been a drastic jump in vegetable prices,” he said.
Yadav, however, added that if the strike persists for long the prices are likely to shoot up.
