New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Sugar production is estimated to touch 260 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year ending September, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said Monday.

“It is expected that in the next three months, another 3 lakh tonnes would be produced in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the country would produce 260 lakh tonnes by the end of the season,” ISMA said in a statement.
“The actual sugar production during the current sugar season upto the end of June 2012 is 257 lakh tonnes,” it added.
However, ISMA, apprehensive of the monsoon, said it was a little early to make a good estimation of the production since the rainfall in the next couple of months would be crucial to firm up estimates on the yield, recovery and sugar production.
The association met June 29 to discuss the figures of acreage under sugarcane published by the government and made estimation of sugarcane yield and recovery for each of the sugar producing states for 2012-13 sugar season starting from October, 2012.
