Chennai, May 7 (Inditop.com) The Tamil Nadu government Friday said the state will not have any power cuts by the year 2011-12 as some of the power projects will go on stream.
Law Minister Durai Murugan said there was a shortfall of 3,000 MW as the state’s total power need was around 11,000 MW but the generation was only around 8,000 MW.
He said 2,000 MW of power is bought from the open market while the balance shortfall is met through various measures like power cuts for high tension and commercial consumers.
Murugan also blamed the previous AIADMK government for not initiating any power project, which he said has created power deficit in the state. He was replying on the demands for grants for electricity department in the assembly.
The minister said the reduction in power generation at Neyveli Lignite Corporation’s plants and the Madras Atomic Power Plant at Kalpakkam, the failure of monsoon, and the delay in commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project have led to power shortage in the state.
According to him, power was supplied for agriculture for six hours in the morning and three hours during the night.
He said barring Chennai and its suburbs, power supply was cut on rotational basis in all other places of the state for not more than three hours per day.
