New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) The Delhi government Monday accepted a request from Tata Motors to deliver 625 low-floor buses by Aug 31, instead of end-June as scheduled.

The company had requested the government to give it time to upgrade the bus engines in the wake of Bharat Stage IV emission norms coming into force April 1.

‘Tata Motors has now been given the time till Aug 31 to upgrade the engines and deliver the buses,’ Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said after the cabinet meeting.

However, a senior government official said the company will have to pay the normal penalty.

The other company which is tasked with supplying low floor buses to the state government is Ashok Leyland.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is at present engaged in adding about 1,368 new buses in its fleet to make it 6,500 ahead of the Commonwealth Games in October.
