New Delhi, June 14 (IANS) Parts of the Indian capital were hit hard by a water crisis after Jats in Uttar Pradesh cut water supply to Delhi seeking job quotas and reservation in educational institutions.
The protestors in Ghaziabad district Sunday turned off supply to two water treatment plants, forcing large parts of east and south Delhi to struggle for potable water.
Jat leaders said they wanted the central government to extend reservations to the community.
‘People in south and east Delhi are suffering from water crisis,’ Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official R.K. Garg told IANS. ‘It’s up to the (Delhi) government to resolve the issue as soon as possible.’
DJB spokesperson Seema Chima said: ‘We are looking at alternatives but at this moment I cannot comment further.’
The Jat protests are concentrated in Muradnagar in Ghaziabad. The Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi water treatment plants serve about 40 percent of the capital’s water needs.
