Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 11 (Inditop.com) Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan Friday said that a section of media has vested interest

in misleading the probe into Muthoot business group scion Paul M. George’s murder and blamed them for spreading “baseless news”.

“A section of the media here has been targeting the Left government. It now appears that the media is trying to target police. The police have done a good job in solving the Muthoot murder case and have arrested those who did it. They have also arrested two criminals who had been on the run. The media need not appreciate the police, but it should not despise the good work done by them,” Vijayan told reporters.

George, 32, was killed Aug 21 midnight near Alappuzha while he was travelling with Om Prakash and P. Rajesh, two men with a long record of criminal cases against them.

The investigation in the case took a turn last week when a TV channel showed that a police official had approached a blacksmith in Alappuzha and asked him to make a particular type of knife.

This was hours after Vinson M. Paul, inspector general of police, told a press conference that the crime was committed using the type of knife that was to be made by the blacksmith.

“The police should investigate into the manner in which the TV channel aired the news showing Prasad (the blacksmith). The media should certainly reveal why they did this news because they have vested interest to mislead the investigation which is going in the right direction now,” said Vijayan.

He also lashed out at the Congress and alleged the party has links with criminal gangs.

“Om Prakash did stay with a former Congress legislator at his quarters here. This legislator is now a Lok Sabha member. It is to hide this relation that baseless allegations are leveled by the Congress party. You make an inquiry with whom did Prakash stay in Dubai?” said Vijayan.

The Congress, as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have alleged that police are under duress because of the alleged links between Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son Bineesh and Om Prakash and Rajesh.

Reacting to Vijayan’s allegation against the media, veteran journalist Babu Bhaskar said that it is unfortunate that Vijayan is speaking like a judge.

“It is the duty of the court to decide if the investigation is going ahead in the right or wrong direction and not Vijayan’s,” said Bhaskar.
