New Delhi, Dec 22 (Inditop.com) Terming it as a shocking incident, a city court Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a mother for strangling her daughter to death within hours of her birth two years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge Suresh Chand Rajan said, “I am of the view that she is not entitled to any leniency because due to the act of the convict, the phenomena of love between the mother and the daughter has been destroyed.”

The court relied on the testimonies of various nursing and other staff of the Lady Harding Medical college.

Convict Manju, who gave birth to a female baby Aug 24, 2007 in the hospital, strangled and smothered her to death within six hours of her birth. She had a son who is five years old.

It rejected the plea of the convict that she had been framed by police in connivance with hospital authorities to cover up the negligence of the doctors.

“The baby was healthy and was in the custody of accused Manju and it is crystal clear from the evidence on record that she has committed the offence,” the court said.
