Mumbai, April 15 (Inditop) Three people have been arrested and police were looking for three more in connection with the gang rape last Saturday of a US national studying here, Mumbai Police said Wednesday.

An official from the Trombay police station said the victim, a student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), located in Trombay in northeast Mumbai, had lodged a police complaint of gang rape.

According to police, the victim had reportedly taken part in a small party outside the campus premises along with two of the accused who later invited her to their home nearby.

There, the other accused were already present and they committed the crime, police said.

Strongly condemning the incident, the TISS said in a statement Wednesday: “We as an institution have always been committed to the wellbeing and safety of our students.”

The TISS said it was taking all necessary steps to ensure that justice was done to the victim. It urged the media to refrain from sensationalising the issue and take precautions that police investigations are not hampered.

Established in 1936, the TISS is among the premier institutes of higher education in the country. It has over 1,150 students, including several foreign students who come for various specialised courses.
