Washington, June 6 (Inditop) US authorities have arrested a retired State Department employee and his wife on charges of spying for the Cuban government, a spokesman said Friday.
Authorities allege that Walter Kendall Myers served as an illegal agent for the Cuban government for nearly 30 years, State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said.
His wife, Gwendolyn, was arrested on similar charges. The couple was taken into custody Thursday, Crowley said.
Before retiring in October 2007, Myers worked as a Europe analyst for his final seven years in the State Department’s intelligence agency, known as the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
He faces charges of conspiring to provide classified information to the Cuban government, Crowley said, but did not provide details on Gwendolyn Myers’ role.
The arrests followed a three-year investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Department’s security outfit.
