Guwahati, April 29 (Inditop.com) At least two people were killed Thursday after a country boat with about 25 people aboard capsized midstream of a river in Assam. Ten people managed to swim to safety and two persons drowned and their bodies have been recovered so far, officials said.
A police spokesperson said the boat was on way from Naharkatia to Bamungaon in Tinsukia district in eastern Assam when the accident took place in the Buridihing river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
“The boat was packed and suddenly lost balance and capsized,” a police official said quoting witnesses.
Most of the passengers were school students from a school in Naharkatia and returning to their village across the river.
Ten of them, five boys and five girls, managed to swim to the other side.
“So far, bodies of two girl students have been recovered,” the official said.
Rescue workers were trying to look for survivors or fish out the dead bodies.
“The weather is very windy and there are rains as well so chances of rescuing survivors look remote,” the official said.
