New Delhi, July 9 (Inditop.com) Two lawyers, including a woman, were arrested and sent to 14 days of judicial custody Thursday on charges of assaulting a judge in the capital, police said.

Rekha Sharma and Vikas Gupta were held for manhandling Additional Sessions Judge Pankaj Gupta in Rohini District Court Wednesday, officials said.

The lawyers allegedly got agitated after the judge passed adverse remarks in a matrimonial case.

According to a statement by the Delhi Judicial Officers’ Association, the judge was making an inquiry regarding a “fictitious petition” when one of the lawyers started obstructing the court’s functioning.

The judge asked him not to interfere, following which the lawyer went out and came back with several others. The group then abused the judge and slapped him several times. When the court staff tried to stop them, they beat them up also. They also damaged court furniture, the release said.

Both the lawyers were produced in Rohini court and have been charged with rioting, damage to public property and obstructing a government servant from discharging his duty.

Meanwhile, Bar Council of Delhi condemned the incident and constituted a three-member committee to probe the matter. The committee will be headed by Additional Solicitor General A.S. Chandiok.
