Lucknow, Jan 13 (Inditop.com) A alleged gangster of Uttar Pradesh and one of his aides were shot dead during a gun battle with police in the state’s Azamgarh district, an official said Wednesday.

Kamlesh Singh, who was wanted in nearly 20 cases including those of murder, abduction and loot, was gunned down Tuesday night at Tarwan town in Azamgarh, some 300 km from state capital Lucknow. A cash reward of Rs.12,000 had been announced for his arrest.

“Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted Kamlesh who was on a bike along with an aide. In response, Kamlesh and his friend started firing indiscriminately. We along with special operation group (SOG) officials also retaliated. It was only after 45 minutes of gun battle that we managed to kill the duo,” police inspector S.B. Rai told reporters in Azamgarh.

“Primarily Kamlesh used to operate in Uttar Pradesh, but he had links with the criminals of Bihar, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh and used to work for them also,” Rai added.

Police are yet to identify Kamlesh’s aide.

Deputy Inspector general of Police (Azamgarh range) K.K. Triptahi told reporters Wednesday that a police team that killed the criminals will not receive the cash reward of Rs.12,000, but would be entitled to out-of-turn promotion.
