Guwahati, April 12 (Inditop.com) Assamese singer Banjyotsna Borgohain was arrested Monday after her parents alleged that she was kidnapped by a Bollywood sound recordist. But the singer insists she had married him of her own free will.
A police spokesperson said 23-year-old Banjyotsna, runner up of the music reality show “Sare Gama Pa Ek Main Aur Ek Tu 2006”, was taken into custody along with 33-year-old Siddhartha Dutta following a formal complaint by her family.
But the singer denied she was kidnapped and said she had married Siddhartha, popularly known as King, in Mumbai.
“I have not been kidnapped and the charges are false. We have married according to Hindu traditions in Mumbai and have testimonies to prove that,” Banjyotsna told journalists at the Paltan Bazar police station in Guwahati where the two were being held.
Banjyotsna, said she married King in September last year after the two met while recording a song for Rajkumar Santoshi’s film “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”.
Banjyotsna’s parents were opposed to the marriage. King also hails from Assam.
“We don’t know why they are opposed to the marriage,” a relative of King said.
The couple produced documentary evidence to substantiate their marriage, but the police were not ready to accept the testimonials in the absence of a proper marriage registration certificate.
“We are investigating the case. We are also investigating if Banjyotsna is under pressure to acknowledge the marriage,” a police official said.
Banjyotsna and King stay in Mumbai and were in Guwahati when they were arrested.
