Hyderabad, July 22 (Inditop.com) The Andhra Pradesh High Court has come to the rescue of a boy who secured ninth rank in a medical entrance exam but was denied admission for falling 15 days short of being 17 years.
In its interim orders Wednesday, the court directed NTR Health University to allow A. Sairam to participate in counselling for admission into medical colleges. It, however, said the admission would be subject to the final orders in the case.
Sairam, who got ninth rank in the state EAMCET (enginering, agriculture, medical common entrance test), was denied admission by the university authorities because, they said, he was under aged.
Son of a farmer from Nalgonda district, Sairam Tuesday approached the high court challenging the stand the university officials.
He had already obtained an order from the state department of higher education but the university insisted that the Medical Council of India (MCI) alone was authorised to pass such orders.
Sairam was eligible for a free seat in any government-run medical college of his choice as he passed EAMCET with distinction. The denial of admission had come as a big jolt to Sairam’s dream of becoming a doctor.
He also met Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to plead his case and the latter promised that the MCI would change the rules to accommodate students who fall short by a few days.
A girl, who was also denied admission on similar grounds, also approached the chief minister. B. Shanthi from Hyderabad is five days short of the minimum required age. She got 492th rank in the EAMCET.
