New Delhi, Feb 1 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Wednesday expressed concern over the condition of the girl child and urged doctors to put a stop to female foeticide.
Addressing the 17th convocation of National Examination Board of the health ministry for doctors who completed their Diplomate of National Board (DNB) examinations, Meira Kumar expressed anguish that female foeticide and neglect of girl child are still prevalent leading to an adverse sex ratio.
The Speaker said that only legislations cannot help, the social attitude had to be changed. “We need to usher in an era of social transformation,” Meira Kumar said, adding that “mere legislation cannot be a solution unless social attitude changes”.
She expressed grief over the declining sex-ratio, adding that there were clinics which had written on their doors “pay Rs.5,000 now and save Rs.5 lakh later”. She said it displayed how the evil of dowry was putting the life of girl child in danger.
She urged the graduating doctors to help in stopping the practice of female foeticide.
Her comments come as battered and abandoned two-year-old girl Falak battles for life in the capital’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
