Brussels, Dec 17, (Inditop) Custom authorities in the European Union (EU) have seized 34 million illegal pills reportedly originating from India, Pakistan, China, Singapore and Syria, EuAsiaNews reported Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the European Commission, the executive body of the 27-member block, Maria Assimakopoulou told reporters here Tuesday that the fake medicines were seized during a coordinated EU customs’ operation between mid-October and mid-December.

Custom officials at Brussels airport registered the biggest ever seizure of illegal drugs in Europe, with 2.2 million fake tablets, of which 1.6 million were painkillers and 600,000 were anti-malaria pills.

She said the seizures were made as part of the EU’s first coordinated “medi-fake” operation. The action yielded tremendous results and β€œis something that exceeded our expectation”, she noted.
