Kolkata, July 1 (IANS) Three more children died at the B.C. Roy Children’s Hospital here early Friday, taking the death toll to 21 in the past three days. However, a probe panel has not found any negligence on the part of hospital authorities, a health official said.
‘Three children died today (Friday) in the hospital,’ hospital principal M.K. Chatterjee told IANS.
Meanwhile, the reports submitted by the hospital authorities and the two-member committee set up by the West Bengal government said all the victims were admitted in the premier paediatric hospital in a critical condition and there was no negligence on the part of the authorities. The reports also denied that the hospital staff had misbehaved with the patients’ relatives.
‘All the 18 babies, which died between Wednesday and Thursday, were brought from various hospitals across the state in a very critical condition and their condition deteriorated on way to the hospital,’ said state health secretary Manabendra Nath Roy.
The reports also claimed that most of children who died in past two days were premature babies and 13 of them are suffering from breathlessness.
Although doctors made their best efforts to provide treatment, it was difficult for them to revive the victims because of the prevailing infrastructure in the hospital.
