New York, Dec 3 (DPA) The US joined the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Unicef to plan a campaign for completely eradicating polio worldwide, it was announced.
The three parties met at United Nation’s Children’s Fund (Unicef) headquarters in New York to sponsor the discussion on “joining forces to eradicate polio”.
The meeting focussed on the ongoing programmes and “lingering challenges to the final and complete eradication of polio”, the US Department of State said Wednesday.
US officials noted that it followed up on a commitment expressed by US President Barack Obama in his Cairo speech in June to work with the OIC.
The meeting was attended by Abdul Wahab of the OIC, Unicef’s Ann Veneman and US Ambassador Frederick Barton. Other participants included envoys from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organisation and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
