ADAM ‘DJ AM’ GOLDSTEIN suffered a drug relapse after developing a dependency on anxiety medication following a near-fatal plane crash in South Carolina last September (09), according to a new report.

The 36 year old was found dead in his New York City apartment on Friday (28Aug09), with The New York Post reporting that drug paraphernalia was found in the property.

An initial autopsy completed on Saturday (29Aug09) proved inconclusive and officials have ordered more toxicology tests to help determine the cause of death.

But police sources close to the case tell TMZ.com the circumstances surrounding Goldstein’s tragic passing indicate he suffered an accidental overdose and did not commit suicide.

The celebrity DJ and his pal Travis Barker were the sole survivors of the Learjet crash last year (08) that killed two friends and two pilots after the aircraft overshot the runway and burst into flames.

Insiders allege recovering addict Goldstein, who had previously claimed to be sober for more than a decade, began using Xanax and other anti-anxiety drugs to combat his fear of flying following the horrific incident – but the prescription medication triggered a “recent” relapse.

TMZ’s sources also dismissed reports Goldstein’s drug troubles were the result of the split from his model girlfriend Hayley Wood earlier this summer (09), saying his relapse had “absolutely nothing to do with his recent break-up”.

An official autopsy ruling is not expected to be released for several weeks.

New York officials released Goldstein’s body to his family on Saturday and a funeral is expected to be held in California in the coming days.
