British rockers KASABIAN have vowed to give the Mercury Prize money to charity if they win the prestigious award – unless they decide to blow it all in a bar.

The band’s third album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is up for the coveted music honour, which sees the winners pick up a $30,000 (£20,000) cheque.

And the foursome intends to donate the sum to a good cause if they’re victorious – but may splash the cash on a booze-fuelled celebration.

Guitarist Serge Pizzorno says, “It’s not just up to me but we’ll probably give it to charity. But if it gets lost on the way out to a barman, so be it.

“If we win, London is gonna get ambushed by some maniacs – people will have to board up their houses. It would be amazing to win but I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes either way. It’s just nice to be in the mix.”

The Shoot The Runner hitmakers are competing against stars including Florence and the Machine, La Roux, The Horrors, Glasvegas and Friendly Fires at the ceremony in London on Tuesday (08Sep09).
